Internal computer speaker works, why don't external?

I know the external speakers work, but when I plug them in I get no sound. When I unplug them I get sound from the internal speaker. I have a Compaq Evo running WinXP, speakers are Boston Acoustics and work fine on my other computer. System says audio devices are working correctly. Please help!
